How to free the Nightsong in Baldur's Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3

Freeing the Nightsong (Dame Aylin) is one of the most pivotal decisions in Act Two of Baldur's Gate 3, taking place deep within the Shadowfell at the end of the Gauntlet of Shar.

Getting to the Nightsong

  1. Complete the Gauntlet of Shar dungeon and reach the Verge of Shadows inside. Step into the water marked as the Shadowfell Entrance to be transported to Nightsong's Prison.
  2. Navigate the floating island path downward — you're automatically granted Feather Fall, so jumping between islands is safe. Defeat or avoid the Justiciar Avengers that appear along the way.
  3. Reach the plateau at the bottom where Dame Aylin (the Nightsong) is bound in place by powerful necromancy.

Dealing with Balthazar

  • If you did not defeat Balthazar before entering the Shadowfell, he will appear and attempt to take the Nightsong for Ketheric Thorm. You'll need to fight and defeat Balthazar (and his summoned minions) before you can free her.
  • If you already defeated Balthazar in his outpost, you can skip straight to the final decision.

Freeing the Nightsong

  • Once Balthazar is dealt with, the decision falls to Shadowheart. She will want to act on Shar's orders and kill Aylin.
  • To free the Nightsong, you must persuade Shadowheart to spare her, or override the decision yourself. Note: if Shadowheart is in your party, you must let her make this choice — preventing her from deciding entirely will cause her to permanently leave the party.
  • Shadowheart's willingness to spare Aylin depends on her Nightsong Points (her secondary approval system tied to how you've handled Shar-related choices throughout Act Two).
  • If Shadowheart is not in your party, attempts to kill the Nightsong simply fail — Aylin cannot be killed without her present, so freeing her is straightforward.

Rewards for freeing the Nightsong

  • Depending on your background, you'll earn inspiration such as Cerimonia Alārum (Acolyte), Damsel No More (Folk Hero), Good Deed of the Day (Urchin), or Soldier of Faith (Soldier).
  • If Shadowheart spares Aylin, she receives the Moonlight Glaive immediately, and after completing Infiltrate Moonrise Towers, Dame Aylin grants Selûne's Spear of Night at camp.
  • Freeing Aylin makes Ketheric Thorm vulnerable, as she is the source of his immortality — setting up the confrontation at Moonrise Towers.

With Aylin freed, take the exit portal back outside the Grand Mausoleum and prepare to finally confront Ketheric Thorm.
